The roofs of our homes keep us sheltered, warm and protected from the outside world and elements. Arguably, they are one of the most important features of our homes, businesses and public buildings, but some go the extra mile to transform their building into something extraordinary, starting with the roof. In this blog, we explore some of the coolest roofs from around the world.
Casa Batlló – Barcelona, Spain
Designed by the eccentric but genius architect Antoni Gaudí, who also boasts the design of the famous Barcelonian La Sagrada Familia and Parc Guell, Casa Batlló can be found in the heart of the city of Barcelona. The inside feels like a moving sea or like you’re walking through a living organism, but the evocative outside is the most talked about and photographed, from splashes of colour to skulled and turtle-faced balconies. Originally designed as a fantastical apartment block, Casa Batlló is now a modernist museum that all can visit. The most impressive aspect of this already remarkable building is its curving dragon scaled roof!
Eden Project – Cornwall, UK
Based in the South of England in Cornwall is the Eden Project, dubbed as the unofficial eighth wonder of the world by many. As a popular visitor attraction, the Eden Project is an education charity that has two biomes that house the largest indoor rainforest with diverse plants from different climates and environments around the world. Many say that the Eden Project is a dome, so the crinkled roof is, essentially, the entire structure. However, their main building, known as The Core, was designed in the shape of a sunflower, along with the roof, and is their base for education projects.
St. Basil’s Cathedral – Moscow, Russia
The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, commonly known as St. Basil’s Cathedral, can be found in the infamous Red Square in Moscow and is one of the most famous buildings in Russia, if not the world. Although ordered to be built by Ivan the Terrible (who supposedly blinded the architect so the design could never be replicated), the Cathedral, as a whole, is an incredibly majestic and unique building. Made up of nine chapels, the decorative domes are designed to resemble an eight-pointed star, each tower sitting on one of the eight compass points!
